Waitutu Lodge - Southland's best kept secret

Waitutu Lodge in Southland is one of my favourite destinations.

It's a quirky place, with lots of books to read, separate bedrooms, showers and a well equipped kitchen. A great place to spend a few days in the bush with family or friends.

You can get to the Lodge by walking for two days along the South Coast Track,  tramping over the Humpridge, or by jet boat down the Wairaurahiri River. These different options make the lodge more accessible than many backcountry huts but despite this there aren't crowds of visitors.
You can read about my last trip there in Wilderness May 2014, Between Two Worlds page 64.
